Your beautiful Pari basket bag was designed and crafted entirely by hand in Panipat, Haryana. The bag was constructed using braids of jute, carefully hand-stitched together, and its rich royal blue color tone and intricate floral patterning were achieved by screen-printing the jute strands.
Jute is known in India as “the golden fiber”, on account of its silky golden hue. It is a natural fiber extracted from the stem of the jute plant, which grows in West Bengal, where our jute is sourced. Once extracted, the fiber is spun into thick, strong threads that can be used for multiple purposes. Jute has been cultivated and used for at least 3,000 years and is referenced in the ancient Sanskrit epic the Mahābhārata. During the period of Mughal rule in India, villagers used to wear clothes made of jute and also used the fiber to make ropes and twine. Jute is still widely used across India today, which is a testament to the incredible resilience, versatility, and timelessness of this material.

In a small village, just outside of Jaipur, we walked into a small family workshop, where for centuries, the ancient craft of traditional handloom weaving has been passed down from father to son. The unique and colorful cushions, crafted entirely by hand, caught our eyes and our hearts.
Thread by thread, knot by knot, the sounds, smell and energy of the workshop swirled into an energy we had never felt before.
Time flew by and we couldn’t bring ourselves to leave. The colorful yarns braided and blended in our life story, creating beautiful bonds of enchanted traditions. That was when we realized, this story is bigger than us. That we needed to bring these stories and their magic back home and share them with a wider community.
The items we collect at NAMA tell the story of a distant land, its people and their exceptional craftsmanship. We invite you to share in this story, our journey and memories.
