Your square-shaped cushion is a work of art, made with love and entirely by hand in a village just outside of Jaipur, Rajasthan, using centuries-old techniques. The cushion was woven on a wooden handloom, using 100% cotton thread, then woodblock-printed with an intricate design. Embroidered fuchsia silk thread provides a beautiful finishing.
Handloom weaving is a signature of Indian craftsmanship and artistry, with its roots going back to antiquity. The craft has historically been the domain of agricultural communities, and this trend continues to this day. Woodblock printing, whereby textiles are imprinted with rich colors using hand-held wooden blocks, is similarly rooted in India’s deep past. It has been practiced in the state of Rajasthan for at least 500 years. The technique involves carefully carving the specified design into the wood.
Our cushions are produced by a family-run business that is focused on empowering and upskilling women, allowing them to support their families through supplemental income. The family is dedicated to its community and a portion of every sale goes to two community-based charities.
